WOW, a month...

It's been a month since I last posted?? Well I've been doing a little of this and a little of that. Model front I've got a huge back log of stuff to paint, I dipped my toes into the commission arena. Decided it wasn't conductive to my painting style or nerves, I hate deadlines!! Built a Dreadknight and magnitized it for a friend, worked on my first Titan model!!! Personally for my armies not much thou, Played a bunch more, won a few games!! finally!!! I really need to stop procrastinating and lay down some paint!! Maybe today? thou football and walking dead tonight after work is happening.

Morallity VS Your Pocket book??

Welcome Back intrepid reader,

Today I received 1 of my packages I've been waiting on for a few weeks. In this package was 1 contemptor pattern dreadnought and 1 of each weapon choice for the dreadnought. I bought it on EBay for the lowdown price of 80.00!!! I know your going to scream KNOCKOFF!!! or RECAST!!!
My thing is I spend ALOT of money on my miniatures, I have legit Forge world stuff and I have what I believe to be knockoffs. Thing also is I put the "knockoff" next to my Legit forge world stuff and I can't tell the difference, they are of the same crispness and the resin is of the same color as forge world "legit" stuff. So my question to you all is this, Why should it really matter? once cleaned up, primed and then painted you can't tell the difference and I just saved myself and family almost 50 to 100 dollars!!! which means I have the extra money to go and buy GWS new codex for CSM and models from my local hobby shop.

On the hobby front, I have a little thing I am working on for a friend, I will post pictures of said project soon, I promise I have alot of pictures and stuff I am building up for a few weeks worth of picture posts.

Benn in a Funk!!!!

Welcome back intrepid reader,

Lately I've been in a painting funk, I received my replacement paints been itching to paint but when I sit down to apply paint to miniature... Nothing, it's like a dog seeing a squirrel, I get side tracked modelling or surfing the net for inspiration. I want to paint i really do but I have a block or something that won't allow me to sit and paint.

Maybe i should switch up my projects? I am at a lose for what to do, someone anyone please help!!!

On the modelling side I have almost as many Painted space marines as i have unpainted now, Primed sitting patiently waiting for paint. They are primed based and ready for paint just no paint!!!

FINALLY!!!

Welcome back intrepid readers,

I finally received my package from GWS, it had the final batch of my paints I had to replace from my dropper bottle fiasco. I also purchased 2 Stern Guard weapon sets. BUT the box only contained 1 said set, so I got on the phone and contacted GWS customer service and a few minutes later, with an apology my missing set was on it's way to me!!! GWS has some amazing customer service.

On the hobby front I am scratch building a Dreadnought drop pod from 5mm foam board and 1mm plastic card stock and an old cereal box, I found the templates at Santa cruz warhammer, I wanted one for my dreadnought but didn't feel that Forge worlds price point was worth the cost of the Item. I will be posting pictures soon of it and what I have been up to hobby wise here in a bit.

On a side note I was so excited to see Forge world doing the Horus heresy books and models, that is till I went and looked at the prices they are asking for this stuff. 70 pound sterling for the book!!!! OMG!!! 70 pounds for a book and the models they have posted range from 70 pound sterling for 3 bikes to over 154 pound sterling for a super heavy that looks like an overgrown Predator!! Now don't get me wrong they look amazing, but the prices IMO don't justify for what you get. It's resin people Not gold bullion!!! Now don't get me wrong I will probably buy the books that contain Blood angels and word bearers because those I can relate to, but I was planning on getting them all. Not now, I have a good job, and i make decent money at my job but I can't justify these purchases to the Lord overseer (A.K.A=Wife). She wouldn't be a happy camper and I would most likely be sleeping in the dog house with my dog Kona!!!

I've also been playing some 6th edition at my FLGS. I've got to say I am having fun!! my battle record doesn't show it I'm 0-1-6 so far with my Flesh tearers, but I'm learning and having fun doing it so that's all that counts.

Till next time keep painting and gaming!!

Battle results

Welcome Back Intrepid Reader,

Well I have a few more Battles under my belt. I am now 0 wins and 5 losses!!! But getting better, I wasn't TABLED in my most recent 2000 point battle against Orks with Necron allies. I lost by Victory conditions. Few things I have learned, Death company with Jump packs lead by a Chaplin Draw LOTS and LOTS of fire. Gabriel Seth is a cool character but ain't all that tough for the points he costs. Deep striking with anything close combat oriented isn't a good Idea.

So I am in a Gaming club that is starting a new campaign 500 point start, and as you win battles you gain Xp and xp unlocks more points and other unit types!! I'm excited to start this league will be definitely using my Flesh Tearers in this league. first 500 Has to be HQ and 2 troop. I got my Ideas for what it will be.

I'm having alot of fun playing, waiting on the rest of my replacement paints to Arrive and somethings i won on Ebay to arrive. Not much more to report as of now.

till next time, Battle on

What I've been upto...

Hello intrepid Reader,

Well it has been up and down for me these past weeks, First I swapped all my Paints to new dropper bottles, I ran into issues with them. I thought I fixed the problem but it has resurfaced, I've resolved the issue by scrapping the effected paints!! which happened to be MOST of my Paints, A very expensive learned lesson to say the least. This has affected my enjoyment of painting so that aspect of my hobby time has been hit and miss.

On the building side of the hobby I have managed to build the rest of my Flesh Tearer army and they sit awaiting primer and paint. My venture into selling unwanted Miniatures on Ebay has borne fruit, I've managed to sell enough to fund my replacement paints, BONUS. I have also picked up some miniatures I was looking for.

Recently I attended Uproar where i saw Godsmack, Stained, and saw a few newer bands I have grown to like since seeing them at uproar.

On the gaming side I haven't gotten to many battles in but will be playing more now that i have found a local Hobby shop that just opened POP! that has Tuesday night Warhammer and Warhammer 40k night. In fact tonight I will be fielding Gabriel Seth and the flesh tearers in a 2000 point list against anyone who would like to play, will post results later.

Well that's about it for this edition of my ramblings on the interwebz.

Shameless self advertisement

Hello to people who find my corner of the web, I've jumped into the ebay ring to unload some of the excess stuff I have. My ebay seller is epwjr1 plz check it out. Most of the stuff listed is brand new, never seen assembly or paint just not in packages. I'm unloading it to make room for other stuff, since ebay only allows 50 items a month for free the other stuff will go up at a later date. On another note I'm kicking around the idea of doing some comission work to test the waters, maybe locally at first not sure thou...

My hobby time has been hit and miss, finished up my paint pot to dropper bottle swap, found some old space marine bikes I've stripped and getting ready for my Fleshtearer army. Also have some other models ready for paint. Just need to find the time and ambition to get going on them. More to follow

Paint pots to Paint dropper bottles

Well today My mini funnels came in the mail, the Last part of the process I needed to swap all my paints to Dropper bottles. So Label Maker, CHECK, Dropper bottles, CHECK, Paints, CHECK, Flow Aid and retarder, CHECK!!! I started the process and a few things I have learned as I go for those planning to do something similar. 1) make a small dropper bottle of Water , and another for Flow Aid and Retarder Mix. I found for myself personally that 20 drops of water then 20 drops of flow aid retarder mix in a brand new pot of Games workshop paint is about correct. I tested paints as I went along to make sure the mixture wasn't to thin or thick. Good so far. Only had 1 problem for some reason Cermite white base paint I added the water and then flow aid and retarder mix, it went from Paint to GEL. Kinda like if you added lemon juice to milk it curdles!!!! needless to say that was interesting. thou it was my only mishap so far. I will continue the process tomorrow, Almost half way Through all my paint pots to dropper swap

1st tourenment with Flesh Tearers in 6th Edition

Well I went to a local Tournament this Saturday, Using 1000 points of Flesh Tearers and 500 points of Tau Allies. Well by the end of the day I had a record of ...0-3?!?! I lost all my battles but had a blast and liked some of the cinematic feel of my battles. My first Battle was against white scars with Imperial Guard allies, My opponent had a manticore that was my bane, he pinned my Broadside suits and went down hill from their, the manticore at one point wiped out my 12 man fire warrior 2 gun drone squad in one shot!!! Seth and the assault squad in the storm raven didn't show up till 3rd turn but by then all my units were dead except for the Sgt of one of my Tactical squads. the second battle was against A salamander Successor chapter with Imperial guard Allies. did better but when my Storm raven showed up on the second turn it was Vaporised with all aboard  by the gun from the Fortification and went down hill from there. the final game was against 1st company Death wing with Grey knight allies so ....All terminators, dragio and a Paladin. did better almost won this one, Highlight point of the battle was dragio marching across the field absorbing Rail gun shots from my broadsides every turn to end up in Hand to hand with them , where they lasted 2 full turns against dragio. Had fun wish I would have done better but will learn more as I play more.

Airbrush Mishaps

Today i found Time to break out my Airbrush to Base coat up some of the remaining space marines I have for my Flesh Tears. Thing is it is a chore to set up my airbrush area, My wife God bless her soul puts up with my hobby quite well, But I haven't tested the whole limit of airbrushing in her house LOL. So I am regulated to the Garage, I have a Paint booth kinda like this Paint booth, that my wife had made at her job, well I hooked up my compressor and brush and had paints ready and miniatures ready and found that my Airbrush was Jammed!!! I apparently didn't clean it thoroughly when i last used it, So disconnected it, unassembled the brush and cleaned it with Isopropal alcohol that did the job, well did some research online notably at www.awesomepaintjob.com and found that Windex and warm water in a Ultrasonic Cleaner would greatly help me. so I ran to Harbor freight and bought this one. cleaned the brush again and away I went base coating my miniatures. Long story short CLEAN your airbrush properly!!! lesson learned

1st Attempt at a Tutorial

This is the Primer I use for all my Miniatures, it provides a nice even coat I haven't had any issues with all the cans I have used.
1st step is to clean up all the mold lines and primer them, it goes without saying by the pictures i totally assemble my miniatures. I believe if you can't see it it doesn't need paint.

Here this miniature is primed and ready for painting

the next step for this guy is a Base coat of Bathaser gold

After the base coat is dry I apply a Heavy wash of Agrax earth shade

After the base coat and wash are dry I applied a HEAVY dry brushing of Gehenna's gold with a wash of Reikland flesh shade to bring out the reds and yellows in the gold.

After the previous steps I took a LIGHT dry brushing of P3 solid gold

Here you can see the armor done and moving into blocking in the wings sword and guns, I used Celestra grey for the base coat on the wings P3 coal black for the sword and Chaos Black for the guns.

Here you can see the wings finished, Base coated as above, apply a wash of Asurman blue once that's dry I applied a Administration grey  dry brush over the whole wing, then it was Ulthuar Grey on the Bottom 3/4ths of the wing leaving 1/4th of previous color showing then it was a Praxel white on the bottom 1/4 of the wing leaving the previous shades showing.

Here you can see the red on the red parts being applied that consisted of Mesphiostion red , followed by evil sunz scarlet, then wild rider in the bottom corners with a dot of white to give the impression of a gem.

This was my first attempt at a tutorial for armor and wings, thou I don't show the other parts I will post finished pictures of them and comment on what I did to achieve the final finished miniatures. This is a decent first attempt at a tutorial IMO for armor and wings using Mostly the new GWS paints. If you have any questions please comment and I will try to answer them if I can.

Hobby Area and clean up

As you can see my Hobby Area is IMO a mess.. I have moved to a second desk to the right of this picture. I have decided after doing some research to swap out my Paint POTS for dropper bottles. I found a website 1/2 ounce bottles with Controlled dropper plugs to swap out my paints for more control of measurement and no mess. Mini funnel to transfer paints with. Also going to add some Flow aid to the bottles to help thin them a bit. I'm attempting to improve my painting area and style of painting so i can focus on improving my painting skills more. I have also Invested in some different Paint companies like P3 paints, and Vallejo Paints to my collection.

Games Day In Review.

Well I attended Games Day Chicago Yesterday, I met Les from www.awesomepaintjob.com really nice Guy. I met James Wappel from wappellious.blogspot.com I've been following his blog for awhile and finally got to meet the man behind the amazing Paint jobs he makes look easy. I have alot of Pictures so take a look if you want. In Hind sight, I would say they need more things to do at Games Day, the build a battle board was finished before they actually had used up their allotted times so if you wanted to do it later you were SOL. the Build a building area line was so long you had to wait 2 to 3 hours in a line to do it, with no guarantee you could get into it. I think for the size hall they had they could have added doubles of the areas they had, lots of dead space with nothing in it. Basically Games day seemed to be a Giant store, which ironically had the largest area of the hall. I guess not ironic at all. The gaming area could of been bigger, I think they need to bring back the Grand Tournaments IMO was fun when i did them. Over all it was a fun day, had a few hiccups with the bus travel being 2 hours late...etc..etc.. but great times all around. Looking forward to next year, and attending Gen-con and maybe Adaptacon who know?
